Capital Project Manager
Tell us about your career history and how you came to work for us.
My background is in interior architecture and design, I have had multiple roles in FF&E spatially designing spaces across different industries both in employment and self-employed. My experience is mainly commercial including for the MOD, accommodation on oil platforms and FPSO, offices, school classroom and common areas, hospital waiting areas, retail outlets, with some residential.
I then moved into more of an administrative role in construction project document controlling where I showcased my organisational skills which led me to the NHS in a role as an Information an Projects Support Officer covering a maternity leave, and it was here I learnt about the portfolio of properties within SCL/CDDFT.
I managed the MICAD system with architectural drawings and departmental occupancy, assisted with FOI requests and requests for departmental space. When the maternity post was about to end, due to my performance and background in architectural design, I was asked if I would like to step into the Capital Projects Team and I haven’t looked back since.
Tell us about your role – what do you do?
As a Project Manager I guide projects from inception to completion, planning and execution of tasks while ensuring projects meet deadlines and budgets. I pride myself on keeping stakeholders well informed through regular communications. I have to look forward, be a quick thinker, and problem solve to adapt to unforeseen challenges and projects on track.
In a typical week, I am split between my desk, forward planning for current and future projects, producing cash flows, communicating with stakeholders, updating project reports and programmes, my studying towards my degree and interim qualifications for self-improvement and being on site with full PPE checking on projects progress first hand. I have recently passed my PRINCE2 exam and I am currently on my second year on a Project Managing Degree.
What’s the most challenging part of your job?
Juggling the different elements required during a project while managing expectations of stakeholders can sometimes be challenging. I find checklists and the satisfaction of completing something on the list helps, and Project change requests in a linear project lifecycle.
What’s the best part about your job?
Seeing a scheme finished, the space utilised and appreciated by patients and staff.
Why do you like working for us?
I have always felt welcome at SCL, we are a good supportive team with knowledgeable, friendly, and supportive staff members.
